About this portrait
Woven from the seven sorrows the Church has counted for centuries — the prophecy of Simeon, the flight into Egypt, the loss in the Temple, the meeting on the road to Calvary, the Cross — this portrait honours the Mother who stood by her Son to the end.
Simeon foretold it in the Temple: “And thy own soul a sword shall pierce” (Luke 2:35). She is Mater Dolorosa, the one who knows grief from the inside — which is why the sorrowing have always turned to her. Close, it is a mother’s suffering written out; far, it is compassion that has been through the fire.
