In a garden he heard a child sing take up and read, and his eyes fell on the words: “Not in rioting and drunkenness… but put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 13:13–14). It was the end of his long flight and the beginning of the Confessions. Late have I loved thee, Beauty ever ancient, ever new. Close, it is grace in words; far, it is the face of a heart restless until it rested in God.
